AI and Human Expertise at the Machine, Side by Side

The company set out to put AI on the factory floor: assistants that help machine operators, technicians and operations managers diagnose and fix issues amid skilled-labour shortages. We built the platform behind its assistant, combining retrieval-augmented generation over technical documentation with maintenance-system integration and machine sensor data on Microsoft Azure, and connecting an expert from anywhere in the world through a smart-glass connection when a problem needs a human.

The situation

The answers sat in manuals, far from the machine.

Manufacturers face skilled-labour shortages and supply-chain pressure, and machine downtime is costly. Operators and technicians need answers fast, but those answers sit in dense technical documentation, maintenance systems and sensor data that are hard to navigate under production pressure. The goal was to make expertise available at the machine, the moment it is needed, without pulling scarce specialists onto every floor.

What we built

An assistant grounded in documentation, with experts on call.

We built the platform behind the company's AI assistant for the manufacturing industry. It brings machine and sensor telemetry together with technical documentation, from manuals to maintenance records, and integrates with maintenance systems. The assistant uses retrieval-augmented generation over that documentation to diagnose issues and guide operators and technicians through tasks and maintenance, supporting machine operators, technicians and operations managers. When a problem needs a human, a smart-glass connection brings in an expert from anywhere in the world, so AI and human expertise work side by side. The platform runs on Microsoft Azure.

How it works

The architecture, stage by stage.

  1. Ingest

    • Machine and sensor data (telemetry)
    • Technical documentation (manuals · maintenance), with maintenance-system integration
  2. Assist

    • AI assistant with retrieval-augmented generation over technical documentation → diagnose · guide
    • Expert-in-the-loop through a factory- and ITAR-compliant smart-glass connection

What changed

What the team has now.

  • Operators and technicians get guidance through tasks and maintenance from an assistant that combines machine and sensor data with technical documentation.
  • When a problem needs a human, an expert anywhere in the world joins through a smart-glass connection.
  • Operator and technician support is available around the clock.
  • Industrial teams get real-time operational insight, governed on Microsoft Azure.
